What is Selective Mutism?  

Selective Mutism (SM) is an anxiety-based condition characterized by a persistent failure to communicate in specific situations or to certain people, despite the ability to communicate fluently and comfortably in other settings. 

It affects about 1 in every 140 children in the USA. These are only the reported cases! Many children are thought of as simply shy and fail to receive a diagnosis.

Selective Mutism is the result of a complex connection between genetic and environmental factors. It is not trauma based.
